The Detective Division is under the command of one Captain. Supporting him are one Lieutenant and two Sergeants who assist in the supervision of 19 detectives.
The division is assigned cases that require long-term advanced investigations. Crimes investigated by the Detective Division include the following:
Homicide - Detectives assigned to the Homicide Unit are specially trained in the investigation of incidents involving death by unnatural causes.
Robbery and Crimes Against Persons - This unit investigates robberies of banks, businesses, and persons and work with federal, state and local agencies in the apprehension of violent violent criminals. Other duties include investigating incidents of serious bodily harm.
Sex Crimes/Crimes Against Children - This unit specializes in the investigation of crimes of a sexual nature. These investigations often require a particularly delicate approach. Therefore they must be performed by detectives who can control emotion and be sympathetic to the needs of victims, yet be relentless in their pursuit of such horrific criminals.
Auto Theft - These detectives work cases involving stolen motor vehicles. This area of crime requires special dedication as workable leads are rare, simply because of the nature of crime. Detectives develop a working knowledge of automobiles in order to properly identify stolen vehicles and are constantly employing ways to improve in their assignments.
White Collar Crimes ~ With the advent of technology, this area of crime, also referred to as economic crime, has seen an upswing in the number of incidents in recent years. Detectives are assigned cases including fraud, identity theft and other means of unlawfully obtaining money that often amounts to substantial sums. Detectives stay abreast of every avenue available in their efforts to solve these often complex cases.
Property Crimes - This area of crime affects more of the general population as any other. For this reason more manpower is allocated and the division now has ten detectives assigned to this area of crime. Their duties include the investigation of burglary and larceny incidents. The goal is the apprehension of violators and the recovery of stolen goods.
Internet Predator Crimes - this specialized area of crime is the latest tool in the division. Investigating child exploitation and other crimes involving a computer can present interesting obstacles to law enforcement. The increasing number of children and teenagers using the Internet and the the proliferation of child pornography has heightened activity by predators searching for under-aged victims. Our division has developed an effective response to cyber enticement and child pornography cases that encompass forensic and investigative components, victim services and community education.
Victim and Witness Advocates - There are two advocates who work with crime victims. These advocates assist victims in court procedures and also in obtaining available compensation.
